The Crookhill estate was dominant in the agricultural character of Clifton for at least 300 years, with the owners, the Woodyeare Family, farming much of the land as tenants of the Manor of Conisbrough.
The 1838 Tithe Map and its inventory is a useful tool for identifying the fields by number and name. Most of these still have the same boundaries. The inventory also gives the names of owners and tenants of properties, some of whom can be found in the census records from 1841. (9
