Poll Tax Returns 1379

Notes by Allen Smith of Braithwell, Micklebring and Clifton History and Heritage Group

In the reign of Richard II, in order to solve the economic crisis of the period, a Poll tax was introduced. Three such taxes were levied - in 1377, 1379 and 1381. Initially the payment was one of 4d for all inhabitants over the age of 14 (except beggars). The later taxes were graduated according to wealth, and although most only paid the 4d, it was still a substantial burden to many households.

Although this gives a list of Township inhabitants, it is believed to be incomplete, as it is known that there was widespread evasion.

Transcription of the Poll Tax returns for "Villata de Braythewell" 1379.
